Maybe you already do, but make sure they know they're required to check those accounts. I had a prof do this back when I was in college, but he never told us what was going on until halfway through the semester. Maybe it's different now (although it doesn't sound like it) but when I was in college (2000-2004) no one used their university email.

This is exactly what I tell them to do, assuming they find it too onerous to check their university accounts. Of course, it is during class time that I tell them this. If they do not come to class, they do not hear my words of wisdom.

I don't know about your school, but my school considered email to be an official means of communication. If email is a way for the university to make official contact with you, why would you not think that the same might apply to actual classes?

In this case it was a student writing in a panic to tell me she couldn't make it to class because her car wouldn't start. We have an exam coming up, so she was worried because she'd miss the review. If she had checked her e-mail, she would have known we didn't have class today.

From now on, I am going to answer those e-mails with irrelevant information: "In response to your stated concerns, let me assure you that I believe Kyle Lohse was a good signing for the Brewers. I predict he will win 15 games."

While I'm at it: it annoys the hell out of me when people need to grab the back of my seat on the airplane for support and they end up jerking the seat back.
