Swung by a good jeweler today-- much to my surprise, 40mm dress watches are not out of the question for me. I'd always assumed that they were too big to be discreet, but maybe with the Covid 15 I am still carrying, there were a bunch that looked very nice. The VC Patrimony 40mm was one. 38.5mm options were OK, but I now fear that the Patek 5196 will be too small, unless viewed at the perfect angle.

The JLC Ultra-thin is now back in the race, as well. I was worried that it might have outgrown the dress category. Maybe for slender Asian wrists, but the one with the moon phase fit me quite well.

While I was at it, I looked at the new Nomos Club-- 42mm, 300m water resistance. Less than 10mm thick, I think, so looked surprisingly elegant. Has anyone tried this series and found unexpected results as far as durability goes? This has the appearance of a go-anywhere watch that can handle sailing and snorkeling, but if it is too fragile inside I may be back to the Submariner or Datejust (or Tudor Black Bay 41) for this bucket.
To be fair, the 5196 is on the smaller side, but fits so well with dress situations. I own this one and never, ever wear it, unless I’m wearing a suit or tuxedo. It’s perfectly at home then. Don’t count it out. As for the JLC MUT, it’s phenomenal. Solid choice.

Yeah-- I know thickness of case and design of bezel can screw with your perception of size. Next time, will try to look in at a Patek dealer. Your 5196G looks truly awesome. And I will hold firm for a JLC with no complications. The steel-case version of MUT could be a semi-prudent way to meet that need (hah! First-world concept!). And I have no desire to get something that is harder to read quickly than the stock market tables.

Atta boy. Again - wearing the watch with suits is fine, but short sleeves are a no-no, at least for me. I’m a bigger guy. If you’re under 6’0” and weigh less than 190 pounds, you may not have that problem at all.

Every few years I'll check to see how fast/slow my automatic watches are running. I set them according to time.gov and follow for a few weeks. Rolex GMT 116710LN is losing just .78 sec/day after 47 days. Total change is only -37 sec. Not too bad for 14 years of wear and a single service in 2016. Tudor Pelagos 25600TN is losing 5.57 sec/day. It's been on the winder for a couple of months.

Both are due for a pressure test. Haven't done it since pre-pandemic.
