This is epic. Tensley makes some of the best syrah in California and their prices are still very fair.

They do have two select bottlings at $95, but the Noir is $55 and their regular syrahs are in the $30 - $40 range.

So they had clay amphorae lined with bee's wax and then unlined clay amphorae. They have a young winemaker, Anthony Yont, and he really seems to experiment and nuance Grenache. I can tell you there was a distinct difference, as we pulled samples for tasting, and the lined was better. As to why clay I can't remember as it was a few years ago and a week full of pretty intense tasting.

I dont drink much wine unless offered to me but I figured the current pandemic is a good enough reason to start so i picked these up today solely because of this thread... had with pate to start and then a strip steak.

I dont know anything but these were quite good IMO and it was interesting to compare and contrast the two.

pandemics and rabbit holes go together like steak and eggs... thanks for the assist.

Dipping into the science experiment corner of the cellar. Really liked this producer but had never had anything other than Santa Cruz juice from them. Shocking to see a Paso Syrah under 13%. Definitely still kicking, but served blind I would not have guessed Syrah.

Two interesting dips into underrated wines this week, as I semi-quarantine myself.

A 1997 Grand-Puy-Lacoste was in the prime of its life. Not a "big" Bordeaux, but charming, balanced, and giving loads of pleasure. 97s got pretty badly shot down for being overpriced on release, but the very best are good.

And then a 2009 Bourgogne from d'Angerville. Generics with age don't get a ton of respect, but this was quite lovely. Can't wait to try the real Volnays from that shop.

Of course, both have been stored in the low 50s, which helps their health.

Just sold a bottle from my three pack of 2016 Scarecrow to a local fellow wine enthusiast. 1k even! I now have two bottles for a total investment of $350. He told me he's interested in the mag of 2017 I have coming but won't pay the 3k I want for it. Oh well, it's going to taste damn fine with I pop that to celebrate my retirement in 2029.
