I'm guessing there are quite a few Band fans here. "Don't Do It" is one of the best songs I've ever heard. Richard Manuel was a god.

Rushed down to the record store on Cooper Street in Santa Cruz in 1968 and bought the first vinyl pressing of Music From Big Pink. At the time, The Band was best known for being Bob Dylan's back-up band du jour. Sorry . . . I don't share your enthusiasm for Mr. Manuel's work. I never did like his keyboard style.

The album (disc and early jacket sans obverse text) was still in mint condition from very limited use until the first of two fires last year. That's another story altogether.

A lot of talent! Each player a killer. Upon hearing the wailing of Levon Helm on The Weight , my youth comes rushing back.

I saw The Band at the Fillmore East, on Second Ave. NYC, in 1969. As I recall they were great. I also saw Hendrix, Janis J., The Doors, The Grateful Dead (with Ron McKiernan), The Allman Bros., and Spirit at the Fillmore East 1969. There are some advantages to being "mature"

My ex gave me "The Last Waltz" for Christmas. I had watched a bit of it a few months ago and while I wasn't very hot on the music I could appreciate the musicians involved. I get the feeling it might be one of those things I need to experience again and again to "get."

The Last Waltz is far from their greatest output. Listen to Manuel's ,more solo-esque stuff (Whispering Pines for example) and the great organ-work of Garth Hudson.

Manuel's "Tears of Rage" makes me cry without fail. That is a song with ******* power.

Wore out my 'best of' compilation. Don't Do It is a classic.

Liked Robbie Robertson's post-Band output, but it's not The Band.

His stuff is OK. I'd much rather listen to Levon Helm, who is still touring extensively. I need to get some tickets soon.

Long Black Veil, Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Stagefright and so many more masterpieces. People do not fully appreciate the Band.

Yeah, it's a shame that they don't enjoy Rolling Stones-esque fame in today's world. I think the Band is better than the Beatles.
