Tailoring Shirts

Hello,

I'm new to the whole tailoring business, so I apologize for what is most likely a semi-obvious question. I was in my local consignment store recently and found an amazing feeling Brioni shirt. I don't wear button up shirts too frequently (I'm a grad student so casual is allowed, and I'm poor) and the ones I do have are always too big.

This shirt fits fine in the neck and the sleeve length, but is quite baggy in the midsection. The shirt is relatively cheap ($24), so I can afford to get it tailored. I'm rather thin (6'0'', 155), and was wondering if it's possible to get a shirt like this tailored enough to fit me well in the body (also, can shirt arms be brought in some to be less baggy)? It currently has no tailoring on the back or sides.

I am 6'0", 185lb and there are NO shirts that fit me. The only options are having them tailored (shirt cost + $25), or having them made for me ($80 and up).

Welcome to hell. Once you start doing this you will never go back.

So in other words it is possible even with that much fabric, it just will cost as much as the shirt itself?

As far as the shirt you found... So long as it fits in the shoulders and neck (and preferably pretty good in the arms too), then YES you can get the mid section slimmed to fit you.

Just watch out for "full cut" shirts and others that are cut large to begin with. In those cases you might need to get them re-cut, as they're made for fatties to begin with. This will cost more than a simple side seam (and possibly back darts) slimming.

I find the ones that work best for me have no pleats across the back, and fit in the shoulders and neck. If you can find shoulders, neck and sleeve fit, the you're home and hosed. Buy 10 of them lol.

A good tailor can make the adjustments so that it seems as like it was tailor made for you. Depending on where you are located and the tailor, it shouldn't cost you no more than $15 to
$20 at most.
