Suits in a Business Casual Setting

Hi there,

I'm currently working in Corporate HR for a banking and financial services company. A year out of college. The dress code is business casual and I'm already one of the more formally dressed individuals. Not that I don't mind a pair of jeans and a dress shirts, but I always wanted a job where I can wear a suit to work everyday. Whether it is a tie or no tie. I just feel more comfortable in one and of course confident. Plus, I would be using my ties more often rather having them lay around.

I've read many "forums" or "articles" that say you should or should not do it because you might give the wrong impression, pretentious or just kill the vibe of the workplace/those in your department. Technically from a policy standpoint, you can wear one but not even the execs on my floor do.

Thoughts would be very helpful.

Much of this has to do with your own confidence and personality. But, putting that aside for now, why not just take small steps. As ter1413 suggested how about starting with some sport coats. Get ones with simple or no patterns, basic colors and a soft cut, maybe patch pockets. Consider loafers, chukkas or derbies in browns or suede as stylish but less formal shoes.

To each their own, full blown suit in a business casual setting may give the wrong impression to others on you. However it all depends on how you carry yourself at the same time. I've always found that in a business casual environment, jeans with an oxford is a great easy look, throwing on a blazer on top of that to top it off.

I agree with naestyle, it's comparable to verbal Grandiloquence as it doesn't fit the situation. It could be an act that may ostracize you without knowing it. Good luck in whichever decision you make!
