Suit or suit separates for big drop guys?

I don't have many occasions to wear a suit, but with prices falling all around me I thought this would be a good time to get a nice one without breaking the bank. However, all the suits I've seen in the past two days that are in my jacket size (41L or 42, depending on the maker) come with 36" slacks, and I've got a 33" waist.

Naturally, the sales clerks all assure me that the slacks can easily be taken in, but I'm skeptical, mostly because my tailor told me that a man who's between sizes should generally buy slacks too small and have them let out rather than buy them too big and have them taken in, especially if one is looking for a slim and streamlined appearance.

I know there are several guys in this forum whose drops are bigger than mine. What do you guys do to get suits that fit? Do you buy suit separates, or do you buy the suit with the big-ass slacks and hire a sail-maker to remove the excess fabric?

You are not going to want to buy anything with the standard drop and then try to tailor that much out. The most I would attempt to tailor in is an inch and a half. After that the pockets are practically kissing on your butt cheeks and so much work would need to be done to the jacket also for it to look correct.

Unfortunately no premium suit-separates exist and your only options are some sort of custom order or MTM.

This may go without saying, but keep an eye on eBay. I dropped $240 -- $180 with live cashback -- on an oxxford suit that must've been made for someone with my proportions (39L-40L, 32" waist, 34.5" (!) inseam). A little patience goes a long way for us odd-sized folk.

The alteration can be done by a competent tailor. I have a significant drop and have the alteration done routinely on the current OTR brand that I buy. I do have several MTM suits, but my recent OTR suits fit perfectly, and have become my favorites for daily wear. In fact, I haven't worn my MTM suits in several months.

Slimmer lines like RLBL, ect., have larger drops but usually still not enough but a small enough amount that they could be taken in easily.

BB charges about 60 to recut a pair of their pants (e.g to remove pleats)

I would assume they could also recut them smaller at the same time
