Suit fit critique, please.

I just bought this Valentino online and I could use some advice on the length of its jacket.

It's a 41L, which is what I normally wear, but it's longer than most 41L jackets I own. Please tell me if you think it's too long for me, and, if you think that it is, please also tell me if you think the jacket could be shorted sufficiently without ruining its overall proportions. If all else fails, I suppose I'll have to order a 41R to see if that's my size when it comes to Valentinos.

Please ignore the sleeves; I already know that they're way too long, but that's an easy fix. Please also ignore the slacks; they look dumpy because they haven't been hemmed yet, but they fit very well in all other respects.

Frankly IMHO it's marginal; in the side-on full-length shot you don't seem particularly foreshortened. And in the first picture the base of the jacket in relation to your thumb could hardly be improved.

But you have to wear it, and I suppose the question is how you feel; because if you think it's too long, will it stay in the back of the wardr-, er, closet?

Best example that the arm lenght - jacket lenght relation isn't the best way to determine a correct fit.

In relation to your arms, the jacket is perfect, but in regard to your overall body it is too long, IMO.

I would try a 41R, if I were you. A jacket lenght alteration doesn't come out very well in most cases.

Way too long (> 1" )...especially from the shot of the back...way pass your butt.

That's what I was thinking. My arms are definitely long in relation to my torso (which is why I'm also on a quest for a reliable source of MTM shirts).

Still, I thought I should check in with the Forum before returning the suit because I was hoping that the difference would be marginal enough that I could just have the jacket shortened a bit. From what I'm hearing, though, it's too long for that.

sorry to keep repeating whats said above, but certainly too long in the body.

Sleeves - each length to change, jacket....not soo much.

I'll also add, the jacket looks too full, and the look would compliment you much much more if you have open quarters, you're a thin guy, open quarters will look much better.

Thanks, ******. Just to make sure I understand your terminology, though, does "open quarters" mean that the two halves of the jacket's front pull away from each other below the button?

yes, exactly.

That will make your legs look much longer, and also make it so that the length of the jacket is less critical.

Closed quarters make it so that its important to get the length exactly right.

Can open quarters be "tailored in" to a jacket by suppressing the waist and changing the height of the button, provided that the jacket fits in most other respects?

I'm asking because I just realized that many of the jackets I already own don't open very much, if at all, below the button.

i'm sure its possible, i would consult with a tailor you trust and see what they say.
