4-in-hand or a derivative thereof. Nothing else cuts it in my book.

For me, yes. A windsor looks tacky to me. I think of it as the collar that you see in communist countries, and even more in countries that were communist a few years ago. The four in hand is a much better, less pretentious look.

I always tie a single/half windsor. Nice balance, but hard to dimple. Four-in-hands usually just wind up being too small. As for being pretentious, I doubt that 95% of Americans could even tell the difference.

The half Windsor is the only way to go. Depending on the outfit, it can be tasteful without being pretentious or casual without being sloppy.

Nothing worse than a four-in-hand that can't fill a spread, except maybe for a Full Windsor under a button-down.

I prefer the Half-Windsor with a medium-spread collar. The best of all possible worlds!

I find the asymmetrical form of the FIH to be quite elegant, even with a full cutaway collar, which I often wear. The great thing about the FIH is you can vary its bulk by wrapping the tie around an additional time. I used to tie half windsors, but after awhile, I found them to exhibit a certain undesirable look of contrivance.
