Has anyone been to a Stein Mart? What's it like?

I've heard it's similar to Marshall's, but can anyone comment on the type of brands they carry?

A new one will be opening up in my community, and I am wondering if this is something to which I should be looking forward.

I think it is vastly more stylish than Marshall's. They have an Alan Flusser line (though admittedly assembled in Asia) that has some hit or miss items in terms of fabrics (in fact, way too many bad fabrics), but the styling is not bad.

Their in-house brand (T. Harris) capitalizes on an English/trad look that is unexpected for this type of store. Again, the style is sometimes good, but check the fabrics (some all-wool and all-cotton, while a few too many polyesters). The T. Harris socks are well-priced and distinctively stylish in patterns & colors.

The tie selection is not as good as TJ Maxx/Marshalls, but, overall, I find their quality to be superior to most discount stores.

I think you should look forward to nabbing a few items there. Good luck.

Stein Mart is very hit or miss -- mostly miss. Much of the merchandise is store brands in which I have no interest. Alan Flusser has licensed his name to one line, and he should probably think twice about that.

SM does get in some closeout merch, but it's usually the same type of stuff you see at TJ Maxx, only more expensive. Nautica trousers for $40-$80 and the like. I've found a few bargains on the deep discount rack, but not enough to entice me in very frequently.

Unlike Marshalls or TJ Maxx, they have more of a 'full line' of suits. They consistently have the Flusser licensed (made in Vietnam) suits, sport coats, etc. I think they also have a few other brands as well as one of the lower Ralph Lauren brands.

If a non-satorially inclined friend wanted to buy a suit, I'd send them to Steinmart before Mens Warehouse. It would be harder for them to go wrong.

They also have Rooster ties which offer some very traditional patterns (regimentals, #1 repp, bar stripe, maybe jockey stripe, pin dot, etc) for about $15 which isn't bad either.

I have some of the T.Harris argyle socks too.

One thing I've had success with there are cufflinks. They're not the best, but they have at least 10 different pairs for under $30.

Although strangely I couldn't find a single French cuff shirt in the store...

I can recommend the Rooster ties. For 15 bucks or less they are decent quality, definitely better than the usual discount store Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica etc. ties. Nice tradly repps if that's your bag.

I can say that I had to dress business casual a summer ago for a job, and found most of what I needed there. I got a few pairs of perry ellis slacks there for under $30.00 each, which have continued to serve me fairly well. A few pairs of cuff links, a tie, most recently I purchased a beautiful blue french cuff shirt with white collar there, though even more recently I spilled some cologne on it [john varvatos splash...] and managed to leave a stain [two really dark blue spots] on the shirt. All in all, there are some decent things if you don't mind walking around for awhile digging through stuff.

They are above a TJ maxx and Marshalls but still below the Cohoes that it is replacing. Women seem to like it more but its mens clothes to the one i've been to was on the lower end.

From the investor's conference call, their stated customer is a 40something woman and they prefer a location close to the nicest grocery store in a neighborhood.

It's a good place to buy decent golf clothing without breaking the bank...

My wife and my sister are both big fans of the women's clothing selections at SteinMart.
