Steep drops on denim @ Marshall Field's

Slightly YMMV since not all Marshall Field's markdown simultaneously, but they should eventually all go down to the same price.

Also, Marshall Field's is a regional store, but I believe they do phone orders if you call the store directly.

Select jeans were marked down to 80% off retail yesterday (at least in the downtown Minneapolis location).

I have too much denim, but when I culled the racks, I saw quite a few Earnest Sewn Patriot Fulton #53 (Straight Leg Selvedge) for $41.97 (the decision was even more of a no-brainer since my wife receives an additional employee discount of 25%).

I don't know much about Earnest Sewn, particularly this style and material (1/2 selvedge??), but they struck me as very clean and austere and I love austere. So I bought a pair. They had plenty left in other sizes.

My guess is in not-so-depeche-mode Twin Cities, dry (these seem dry, but have slight honeycombs & whiskering) selvedge denims not marked on the back pocket with any branding or embroidery espouse a farmer/worker appeal that mainstream folks don't want to rock. Hence the overstock. Also, these originally listed at $210.

I don't know anything about the other brands that I saw on sale (Chip & Pepper, True Religion, etc.), but I did consider a pair of Levi's Premiums (originally $110, now $21.97). But I passed.

Finally, Marshall Field's will be changing their nameplate to Macy's on Sept. 9th. As a result, Prada & Miu Miu have terminated their men's & women's accounts. Starting now, I see prices reduced by 40%. Eventually, MF's will clear everything out at 90% for all that remains.

Wowz those are good prices. I checked the website and they don't seem to stock any Earnest Sewn, True Religion, or Chip & Pepper. Which store are you referring to here?

The Fulton in patriot seems to've sold poorly everywhere. Not sure why. Saw a bunch at Bloomingdales for 80 down from 200. They're still 210 at Revolve.

We've seen them at the downtown Minneapolis & Ridgedale (Hopkins), MN locations. These are instore sales/prices only.

At Minneapolis, they're clearly marked 80% off at $41.97. At Ridgedale, they still reflect the 40% off sale - when you ask them to scan the tag, they'll correctly ring up at $41.97.

As I said earlier, perhaps this is a reflection that people still don't appreciate fabric and construction and would rather let the ornate emblem on the back pocket dictate their purchases.

wow, great info... Were they Skinner premiums? Were there plenty of sizes for the Earnest Sewns?

Sorry I can't help you much on the Levi's...don't know much about them. The sales clerk said that if I normally wear a 32 waist, I should get the 34. Also, they appeared dry/raw and completely unprocessed (very solid, dark indigo with no whiskers or honeycombs). But not selvedge. Again, they were normally $110, but now are selling for $21.97.

I only looked at Earnest Sewns in the size range of 30, 31, & 32. A couple in each size. Didn't bother to look at bigger or smaller sizing. Absolutely no one ever tried on the ES jeans I tried on - the buttons fly had never been released. Took me a few minutes to undo them.

My guess is that Ridgedale will have more in available since their stock doesn't reflect the correct, lower pricing on the tag...$125.97 instead of $41.97.

An interesting note...at the time of purchase, the sales clerk exclaimed 'are those Nudies?!' Apparently, they had the ubiquitous Nudie booklet under the register that they had been poring over, provided by the department buyer. He recognized the logo on my back pocket and explained that Marshall Field's might be getting Nudies in for sale.

Does Ridgedale have the same selection as the downtown store? If so maybe Ill do there instead. Also, are there any stores that you recomend visiting in the Minneapolis area? Ive only been here a few months and havent found too much yet.

...and for more conservative but surprisingly good selection of mid to high end men's clothes, at possibly great prices at the end of season, marshall field's in downtown (and to a lesser degree, marshall field's in southdale & ridgedale). Again, visit end-of-season sales in this city - for a large metro like ours, we're much less fashion forward than chicago & the coasts, but carry a lot of top brands that are marked down heavily (at least 60% and even a good selection of 80%).

Neiman Marcus & downtown MPLS Marshall Field's actually do a great job at covering an extremely wide range from mid to very high end labels. From Paul Smith, Varvatos, Prada, RL Purple Label, D&G, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, and Prada (at least for now), you shouldn't find yourself wanting for too much more.

If you're an SB kind of guy, check out Familia Skateshop in St. Paul, Cal Surf in Uptown, and The Hut in Wazata. They all have Nike SB accounts.

Have fun with emptying out your wallet and ratcheting up the sartorial splendor.

Word of caution with regard to sales clerks...many of them don't go out of their way to check the clearance racks, where all labels and sizes are jumbled together.

So I can't blame them for not wanting to cull the racks for your size and brand. While they could have sold out already, my guess is that the clerk was unwilling to spend the time or doesn't even know that the model you want has been relegated to a separate section (clearance, away from the full or sale price, brand-delineated racks) altogether.

If you're really eager to find the Fulton's and live close by, you'll best serve yourself by visiting the store and checking the clearance racks. In the case of Ridgedale, you'll need to visit the regular sales racks (if they haven't correctly remarked the 40% racks to 80%).

I'm pretty sure your right... They all seemed pretty pissy. I ended up getting them from the Chicago store though. The girl there was very knowledgeable and helpful. Got them for $52 and some change--including shipping to Texas. Thanks alot for the great info!

Glad you got a pair! And you're absolutely right...although I hate to paint with a broad stroke, many of the clerks are worthless. If you're lucky, you'll find an odd, outstanding clerk that'll go to great extremes to help you out. Most of the time, I'll bypass them altogether.

$52 sounds about right - $42 for the jeans and $10 for the shipping.

I really like these Fultons. Unlike my RRDS, these are much more fitted (without being pornographic or looking like your ass was shot off by a 3006). Very clean lines with a touch of rock star. Also really like the spartan, yet special details.

Wow, that's a good price. I have a few pairs of Fulton Patriots that I was going to list on the selling section. but I didn't pay nearly that little!
