Of the grand old hotels I have been too, the Waldorf is just about the least faded. It strikes me as being in excellent repair, with few if any out of date facilities.

+1. I've only eaten at the Meridian, but it's an awesome hotel.

I prefer to minimize the amount of skin tight D&G shirts within sight.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer the old school of hotel design to this minimalist sillinness. It's just there's a certain sense of being ever so slightly, I guess, forgotten. I get the same feeling at the Savoy in London. Some old hotels don't have it, for example the St Regis and say Claridge's.

I actually hate trendy hotels quite a bit.

I love the decrepitude and poignancy of those sorts of hotels.

Preferably with dusty outdated equipment that was really high-end at the time still being used.

I once stayed at a hotel in Las Vegas that was like that--it was the hotel where Tupac was shot.

You may not have meant this, but the furnishings and fixtures in my room were decidedly period. All in perfect condition and working order, but definitely not the latest.

We've had better luck with boutique hotels in NYC. The Benjamin is nice.

I stayed at the Benjamin last year. I wasn't impressed. They have this pick your pillow gimmick, it took three attempts to get the pillow I wanted ( a gel roll whatever) and then when I found no gel roll in it, they said they were out of stock. Sigh.

Plus the concierge was totally unhelpful about transportation matters and suggested that I go to the concierge in the hotel around the corner to ask. Did you ever hear of such a thing?

My wife and I stayed there for a week on our first visit to NY.

I would recommend you stay there, especially for the kind of trip you are planning. It has a nice amount of nostalgia built in to the place, and you will take some of that away.

I think we stayed in a ‘superior’ room. It was spacious enough and the service was very good generally, as I recall.

It's such a staple as far as reputation goes, but I've never stayed there. I'd like to one day though!

2 things as i know this hotel well:

1) Join Hilton Honors (free online)
2) When you check in for your basic room reservation, state you are an HH member , put your amex on top of a $20 - politely ask for an upgrade to the towers. "May I please have an upgrade to the Towers, we are really excited to be here..." Remain calm, and very nice. Make it obvious you are from out of town...

Virtual guarantee. They are really pushing for business these days... desk has authority to upgrade.

I had no idea you were one of THOSE people. Do you carry it under your arm?
