Looking to start off the new year with some new smartwool socks. Does anyone of good sources to purchase these at a discount? Looked at STP but nothing in my size.

I just bought my first pairs. I've used them for hiking and I a believer. They feel great and wear like iron.

I've never worn them, but a family member was singing the praises of them over the holidays. I'll have to give them a try.

I've bought a bunch of pairs (probably 5 or 6) from STP, none lasted more than a year - they all developed holes in the heel. never will buy those seconds again

I got about 20 pair a couple years ago when a Bass Pro Shop near me was first opening up, so try some sports stores, b/c they have some great colors and size variations.

I really like their walking/hiking socks but am a bit less impressed with their "urban" offerings. They don't see quite as robust as their walking socks...They thin quite quickly at the heels, which is disappointing. Also a few pairs of argyll smartwools that I owned started to show fraying along the edges of the diamonds, and aged rapidly. I'm sticking with Pantherellas for more "formal" socks.

Their hiking socks I've found last a long time. It's their dressier socks that fall apart. Mine are ripping at the top from pulling them up.

Never used them for everyday socks, just skiing. Their winter sports socks are great.

I bought a pair of the smartwool hiking socks and a pair of the "PhD" smartwool socks and the hiking socks are far warmer and durable. The PhD socks are pilling up like mad and the thinner parts on top actually make my feet cold. I would recommend the medium cushion hiking socks.

Anyone else have other types of smartwool socks?

I have 6 pairs of the hikers, and 2 of the PhD. I wear them every day in 3 seasons, fantastic socks. I don't see the same problems with the PhD's, but they do cost a bunch.

I usually get mine at STP or REI, the latter usually do 10% off on 3 pairs.

I like the Smartwool stuff in general, but I had problems with the three pairs of old-school athletic socks I got from them. Each one developed holes in the heel in less than a year. Maybe there other socks are better, but the ones I had flunked the durability test ...
