Sizing for overcoat bought from eBay?

Hi all,

How does one measure sizing for an overcoat in relation to a suit jacket? How much larger should it be compared to a coat?

As a general rule, the size remains the same.

A jacket "size 40" will fit a chest measuring 40", the actual jacket is bigger (something like 42") to fit comfortably over that 40" chest. Same thing about an overcoat; here the garment "size 40" will be cut bigger still, to go over the jacket that goes over the chest.

There will be exceptions where you like your overcoat either bigger or tighter, but that's more a question of preference.

Thanks for the replies guys. My original question was not so much with regards to sizing, but to the actual measurements of the coat. For example, if my best fitting jacket has a 45.5 inch chest and 24.75 inch sleeves, how much larger should an overcoat be? Thanks!

Typically, about 2" of ease are given for an overcoat. So you'd be looking for something with a 47-48" actual chest measurement.

Edit - and the sleeves should be long enough to cover your shirt and a bit of your hand, so that gloves will stay covered when you move.
