Size 40 on a vintage Italian overcoat

I’ve recently started watching a vintage Versace coat on eBay which has a size 40 stitched into the inside of the collar- I’m a bit baffled as I’d normally expect to see something in the range of 48-56 given that this would be European sizing. To add to my confusion the seller states that the pit to pit measurement is 65cm which would put the size closer to a 56/58 in my view... has anyone heard of different sizing being used on vintage garments?

Or it could just be a knock off.

Could you provide a link?

I'm not a Versace expert by any means but that coat looks really odd and worn out. If you're considering buying it, I'd pass. Even if it's real, it doesn't look like anything special.

I agree with the above posters about the style. Often Italian makers put a UK/USA size in for that market; especially before European sizes were well known. 50 inches chest could very well be late 80s / early 90s sizing for a brand such as Versace.
