I wear my penny loafers sans socks, even when I'm wearing them with my linen and poplin suits. Can't imagine wearing socks with them.

A man gets to a certain age where that is no longer advisable. Unless you are Old Dog.

Unless I'm in court I never wear socks to the office on Fridays and prefer not to wear socks all weekend. Personally when when I have a pair of penny loafers that gets older they get demoted to being my sockless penny loafers-- that's a true sign of affection. Similarly I usually break in new boat shoes by wearing sweats socks for a while and then promoting them to being my sockless boat shoes once there Well broken in.

This. I especially love wearing unlined penny loafers in the summer sans socks. They get this delightful "slipper-like" feeling and it's great.

Sockless is a look where I live. I do it occasionally but find it uncomfortable. I discovered the small socks that don't show a few years ago and if I want the sockless look, I now wear those. In any case, I don't think with those pants your shoes, socks or lack of either will matter.

^I agree, Sockless look is a thing, wear shoes without socks another one.

I never never would use shoes without socks, It's an uncomfortable and stupid thing when there are available perfect invisibile loafer socks (search Falke) but I really like sockless look during summer also with casual sport coat.

When I think of no socks I think of Jack Purcells, Weejuns (or similarly styled pennies). To think that going sockless would be wrong with these shoes/sneakers would wipe out generations of Ivy style, not to mention the whole West Coast Jazz scene of the 60's.

Sockless is more a state of mind than a fashion statement.

I think I've tried sockless with darker suits a handful of times but it was a little too casual (for my line of work); however, I break from this when I wear linen/cotton suits coupled with loafers or tan shoes. Here in NYC, there is a little more wiggle-room when it comes to deviations.

I can't do sockless simply because I think it's uncomfortable. I will do the loafer sock from time to time depending on what I'm wearing but only on weekends. I can't pull off the sockless look during the week at the office.

Nobody can pull off the sockless look at the office.

Drivers, boat shoes, weejuns and other moccasins style shoes are basically designed to be worn without socks. Think about it. The Mohicans did not have socks.

I don't think anybody could say that any moccasin shoes are really acceptable for office wear, and I really can't see how anyone can argue that any other type of leather shoe can be worn properly or comfortably without socks.

Pretty much agree with this, and it's the reason I wear my loafers only with casual suits (i.e., poplin and linen).

I'm in the UK and over here it's a crime to wear chinos with socks.
Basically if you wear chinos you can't wear socks with them ( no matter what footwear) lol

This is a bizarre statement. If I saw somebody wearing chinos and sockless, I would instantly assume they were American. .

Boat shoes are the only shoes I ever wear without socks. Anything else I find uncomfortable and incongruous. Those AAAC trad guys who wear Alden PTBs and no socks are masochists.

Don't - unless you are a billionaire italian industrialist with shapely tanned ankles and a heroin habit which people have come to accept as individualist chic.
