Is it necessary to polish and/or condition your shoes every week even if you don't wear them that week?

I once read a story of a British hunter who cleaned all his guns every week even if he had not used a particular one. The moral here is he eventually wore the rifling out from over use of the cleaning brush not from the shooting of it.

Use a brush to keep the dust off and don't worry about the weekly cleaning and polishing.

I couldn't agree more with what shoe-nut said. A soft cloth to rub dirt off and a light polishing is all that is needed. I mentioned in a previous thread that using lexol conditoner is a good thing and it is. But I forgot to mention that I do the whole shoe renewal thing only twice every year and/or i happen to scuff up my shoes real bad. But that really only happens when I get into a crowded train and everyone is stepping on my shoes....

They will eventually dry out if you just leave them there forever, but as long as you wear them (and polish them before or afterwards) every few months or so, they will be fine.

cleaning your shoes with a quick brush to get off dust or loose dirt shoes should be done regularly.

In terms of polishing, if you have the time, do so before you know when it will rain. Other than that, it's like drinking water. The feeling of thirst is a delayed response, when you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated and should have had water long before. Don't wait until your shoes look "thirsty," i.e. dried out. You want to regularly maintain that before that happens, like drinking water on a regular basis before you feel thirsty. Now how often does this mean? Well it depends on climate, how exposed your shoes are to the elements. In sunny california where I wear my shoes indoor all day, I can get away without polishing for a month or more, although looking at my tramezzas at this moment, I've been a little neglectful.
