Shiny or matte shoes?

For my wedding, I am looking at black patent leather shoes and black plain-toe Oxfords. Either way, should they both be very shiny or can it also be more matte? Is this just a matter of preference? The shiny ones just make me think of tux rentals shoes for some reason.

I'm either going to go in one of two extremes. A black tux or a white dinner jacket with tux trousers. I'm not sure if I like the ultra shiny shoe look so I just want to see if it is appropriate to wear matte shoes? Have traditionally shoes always been shiny?

If you wear a tux, get the "shiny" ones. If you wear a suit, get the "matte" ones. If you're wearing a tux but want to avoid the "tux rental" feeling, wear pumps.

Depends what you mean by 'ultra shiny'. Black shoes should always be properly polished and shined, whether they're patent or plain calf.
