Scarf with ascot knot with a suit in the evening for "informal" (aka suit+tie) event?

In two weeks, I will attend an informal evening event (i.e. "formal" in vernacular, meaning they usually require men to wear a suit and a necktie).

I've seen a lot of men sporting a silk scarf tied as an ascot instead of a tie for similar events, and I absolutely love the look of that. However, I've been told that the ascot is reserved for events during the day - is that rule still applicable? Or should I just not care about it?

Also, if it is deemed acceptable, I would buy a new scarf, but I'm unsure about the color. I'm thinking black suit and white shirt, what would you recommend?

He can get away with it. But it is mostly la day look. Ascots also usually go with sport coats or blazers rather than a suit.

Jude Law, or at least his stylist, has perfected the use of a scarf as an evening accessory.

Jude Law always looks like a god amongst men (although, he'd better get some hairplugs soon...).

Anyway, that's not quite the style I'm going for, it's too casual.

Any more thoughts? I'll try to put on my suit and use a random silk scarf to show you what I'm looking for, and then you can help me finding the right color..

I honestly think Law looks terrible there. I don't have a clue whats going on in that picture. Is that a black linen suit with a black shirt unbuttoned to the belly?

There are two kinds of ascots...
The first one is called a choker or neckerchief (a small silk scarf for casual wear(but with covered chest/neck, etc.)
The other is an ascot and is the original scarf/tie worn during formal events like Royal Ascot.

One can wear a choker if one wants to look a bit more formal than without a (bow)tie, however some people think it looks pretentious and archaistic. I think it looks smashing!

Yes, as I said in the first post, I'm talking about what you call a choker ("silk scarf tied as an ascot"). I also absolutely love it, I'm simply looking for a color that'd go nice with a black suit. I don't like that light blue - or whatever - color in your pic. I have seen black scarves with white dots, or black/red combos, which look more unobtrusive than what your guy on the photo is wearing. Any thoughts? BTW, attached pic is the suit I'm going to wear (pic taken from EA website). [Actually, it's the pic hereafter, see "Reason for Editing]
