Removing Verdigris

I have acquired a set of vintage cufflinks that are infected with verdigris. Since it spreads, I need to fix it up, and store the links separately until that's done.

I know the cure is immersion in a vinegar bath, but I'm concerned about immersing the whole link. The verdigris is in the middle of the toggles, around where they join the shaft.

Any suggestions on how I might bathe the shafts without immersing the front part of the links?

Put the vinegar in a shallow saucer, bowl, whatever...

Cover it with plastic wrap just over the vinegar... poke the link through the plastic, suspended over/into the vinegar...

Pardon the ignorance, but what is Verdigris?
