I just picked up an otherwise nice pair of AEs that look like a lazy chimp applied the edge dressing. Anyone have any bright ideas how to clean this stuff off the uppers?

Edge dressing contains dye which means you'll need to take them to a cobbler, let them strip the shoe(s), and re-dye it/them.

Good luck with removing the edge dressing. Unfortunately it can harden the leather, so I hope you're able to remove it.

You're now aware of a major reason for why I don't use edge dressing. I'd suggest sending an email AE or going into your local store. That will be your best bet. Who knows? Maybe they have a product that will work.

A cobbler advised me to not use it many years ago because of how it builds up on the soles and how it can harm the uppers. I haven't touched it since then.

It seems like every pair of Aldens I see these days has a nice big spot of edge dressing on the uppers.

There are plenty of other threads for the nasty girls and their bovine followers to go make fun of other kids' shoes, thanks.

Just a quick update. Took the edge-dressing besmirched shoes into my local cobbler and had them beautifully cleaned up for $5.

It's never as hard as this forum would have one think.
