Removable collar stays or not?

I am trying a new shirt maker, who suggests sewn in/permanent collar stays. I always have used removable ones for fear that after pressing with the collar stays inserted, an imprint of the stay would be visible through the collar.

What is everyone else's experience on this subject? Thanks in advance.

I still have a couple of shirts in my wardrobe that are over ten years old, and have seen some serious wear, that have sewn-in collar stays. I've never had a problem with them showing through the collar, although admittedly I do all my ironing myself.

However, I really do prefer removable collar stays. Not only do I think that it extends collar life, but I also like being able to insert a shorter or a longer stay to suit my preference. In my experience, shirts with sewn-in stays tend to have very "straight" collar points, whereas all my shirts with removable stays have a nice roll to the collar. That alone makes it worthwhile for me.

OP,

I have all my collars non-fused, with removable stays. This way, the collar rolls nice and soft. I hardly ever use stays, but like to have the option to.

I used to have top-fused collars with built-in stays and laundered them countless times in hotels. No ill effects to speak of in my experience.

I have a couple of Canali shirts with the stays sewn in. While they are not generally visible, I remember a couple of times when I did see them after poor treatment from a cleaner.

I much prefer removable stays -- IME, they seem more solid and provide a cleaner look

I think you need a new new shirtmaker.

I hate sewn in collar stays and will never get a shirt with them again.

I got a great set of 8-10 pairs from Neiman Marcus Last Call for $15 with a discount of 20-25%. They are regularly there for $20. Very good silver with Neiman Marcus engraved on one side, which doesn't matter because no one will ever see them.
