I am going to order a couple of ties this week, and I am debating between 3 1/4 and 3 1/2 (at the widest point). I am looking for something more proportionate for my body type (5' 8", 148 lbs.). Which size would you go with?

Thanks!

given your slenderness, I'd say go with the narrower. you can carry it off well, provided you are the right age. Most narrow ties I notice have a schoolboy flavor to them, so if you are out of the age and/or weight class for that look, I'd caution against them. They can also be kinda rat-packish, but usually I see them worn more preppily than that.

And definatly avoid anything narrower than 3 inches, unless you wanna rivive all the SF hand-wringing over Pete Doherty's influence on pop culture.

I was trying several of my 3 3/8" ties recently and decided they are still too narrow, though the fashion is headed that way. 3 1/2" is the classic width that is wearable nine years out of ten.

For classic/business clothing, 3.5" is probably narrow enough, to help avoid them looking dated later. If it were me though, I'd go with the narrower.
