Question on alteration

I brought two BB OCBDs to the tailor to have darted/slimmed (these are slim cut, but we know how BB's slim cut is). While having it on, he said he would sew the square piece all the way down (pic below is to graphically show what I mean by "square" piece running down the back), slimming the shirt, instead of darting, or taking it in. When he held it together, it took it in to where I would want it.

Was in a rush to get back to the office, and now I'm thinking "wtf did I just have done?" Has anyone else slimmed a shirt this way? Wanted to get input before ruining two good shirts.

I think I can still cancel this method, but was also looking to educate myself as well. Thanks!
