I would like to understand the different quality of corduroy out there

I keep reading about different bales...ie 14 bale or 8 bale corduroy...what does this mean?

Does the higher or lower number of bale correspond to the weight of the Corduroy?

Which is considered softer or more luxurious? Which is considered longer lasting or better wearing? Which wrinkles less?

Where do the more respectable quality of corduroy come from?

Looked at Booksters, can anyone, through personal experience, comment on their corduroy?

Are there other online retailers who have corduroy available for purchase or viewing?

Are there other resources members can refer me to via links online to assist in educating me further?

The word is "wale" and it refers to the number of ridges per inch. On a wide-wale corduroy, there are fewer wales per inch, because they are wider, and the fabric will feel thicker or heavier. A very fine-wale corduroy is sometimes called a "pinwale".
