Proper Length of Jacket?

Greetings,

What is the correct length of a men's jacket?

I used to think that it was covering the seat of one's trousers.

Recently, however, I read somewhere that it could be slightly longer.

If the latter is the case, then how much longer? An inch, more? In addition, does the fact that I am taller make any difference?

Comments appreciated.

I'd think it would depend on the length of your torso and the style of the coat. I like mine to hit lightly curled fingers on my longer arm, which would be about an inch below my seat, or at least where I think it ends

My suit coats are probably a tad longer than sport coats as well.

Thanks for that.

I am 6'6" and in addition have a long torso, so how might that alter the equation?

Assuming you're talking about an off the rack coat, your options would be limited to the lengths of the various makers you were looking at as this isn't easily alterable.

I'd wager you'd need an extra long coat which would limit your selection at a lot of stores, but might actually offer some interesting options at the off price outlets that carry merchandise that wasn't in demand.

But it's all relative, if you're a difficult fit you would either have to search out a maker that seemed to work, deal with what you can get or get something made to measure.
