Most formal shoe short of patent leather or pumps. Look great with suits. I wouldn't wear them with anything else.

so definately appropriate with suits. with a good shine, maybe a tux, altho you wouldnt go that route? i like brown, so im looking for a very versatile pair of black lace ups. i dunno for some reason im just wondering if they are too formal for a suit. i guess im being silly. im just really used to captoes, mostly cause i feel i have big feet and a plain toe shoe makes that plain to see.

A respected men's clothier here told me that black plain-toe bals were the most versatile shoe, that you can wear them with jeans or with suits. But then again, he also told me that you should be able to fit four fingers (side by side) between your heel and the back of the shoe.

While your shoes shouldn't fit too snug (as your feet tend to expand over the course of the day), four fingers is a bit much.

I was trying to obliquely support EL72's comment while undermining the clothier's. I guess I was too oblique.

I like that plain toe balmoral, however I think is more suitable to formal events.

I prefer the captoe for business
