Hello all! We all know deciding on what tie to wear with a particular dress shirt can be a daunting task! My question: What is the difference between the type of shirt (color, pattern and the scale of the pattern) you would wear with a pin dot tie versus a polka dot tie of the same color, scale and fabric? Thank You!

A pindot is more formal than a polka-dot. I'd be disinclined to wear either with a patterned shirt, though I have a co-worker who often wears a polka dot with a fancy stripe shirt, but his whole look is more Paul Stuart than I'd go.

If a very conservative occasion, then pindot, white shirt, and black shoes. Slightly less conservative, sub in either a blue shirt with brown shoes, a bigger-scale dot, or both. With a simple striped shirt, I'd be inclined towards a neat print rather than a dot. A fancier stripe would be better off with a solid tie.
