Re Witcher: How good are the books? Tolkien level? Martin level? Or more like Terry Brooks?
OK - downloaded the Last Wish from the NYPLibrsry. That will be my subway reading when I am done with the Illiad. The two of collections of short stories are imo fantastic(Sword of Destiny and The Last Wish)
The Saga is very good too, especially the first 3books, the 4th one is decent and the 5th one is meh.
What's great about Sapkowski is that his historical/mythical research and knowledge is very good; also on things like politics and trade. Hard to compare it to Tolkien or Martin, it's more magic heavy than Tolkien or Martin, but the world described is more like Martin's; grim and 'realistic', not really good-vs-evil. Stories and first books are on highest level.
I started Last Wish this morning. That is some awful writing. I deleted it. The plotting and world-building may be good, but it read like teenage fan fiction.OK - downloaded the Last Wish from the NYPLibrsry. That will be my subway reading when I am done with the Illiad.

I do agree with wojt that having great voice work for an audiobook can go a long way towards elevating an otherwise average story.
