New member needs help with Marco Valentino super 160's

Hi friends

After lurking these forums for a couple of months I decided to buy a suit from ebay seller Wizard of Aahs. I found a Navy with blue stripes Marco Valentino suit made with super 160's wool and it came today.

The suit is great especially for the price. It fits well in the shoulders and the rest isn't too bad either. The pants need to be let out a little in the waist and seat.

I am a noobie when it comes to suits. I bought this for a cruise I am going on and for some speaking engagements. I was looking for advice from members on what to have altered on the jacket.

Any help appreciated,

You need to size down the jacket. It looks too big in the shoulders and too long.

My hands are infront of me in the one pic and makes it look longer. The webs of my fingers are at the bottom of the jacket. Not sure if thats where it should be though.

This is one of the only suits he has in super 160's so getting a smaller jacket wouldn't be an option. I'm a size 38 but am actually more like a 39 in any other suit I've tried. This jacket is a size 38 but has 181/2" shoulders as apposed to 18".

Do you think it's alterable to make it look more desireable?

Seems like the shoulders are too big for you. You need to size down. If this was a 38 - try the 36.

Thanks I appreciate that. Problem is this suit doesn't come in a size smaller they don't make the Marco Valentino's in 160's wool any more and this happened to be left over. The 150's are quite different in quality from what I understand.

A differant size isn't an option. Only returning or having it altered. Can a good Tailor fix this?

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but I think a good tailor could do wonders with it. It could look good, but it would never be perfect.

I think the jacket needs:

1) some cleaning up on the back - probably because your shoulders slope slightly

2) a little bit of waist suppression

Pants looks a bit tight - see if the tailor can let it out by 1". Also raise the sleeves by .5"

I went to Paul's Alteration Center at Bathurst and 401 today. He said the shoulders and length were perfect but is suppessing the waist and shortening the sleeves by .5 inch as well as letting the waist and seat out about an inch.

I'll post pics when I pick it up.

I don't get it. You came asking for advice. Everyone that posted advice said the shoulders were too big. You took the suit to an alternations place (note: not a tailor), and they gave you contrary advice. They are probably unskilled and can't do shoulder work, and that's why they told you the shoulders fit.

Too late to the party, but the other posters above are correct. The jacket was a size too big for you. The shoulders were way too wide. Your alterations guy was wrong, probably because as already noted he can't do shoulders.

Unless you absolutely had to have this immediately for some reason, you'd have been better off getting something that fit you better regardless of the fabric. 160s vs. 150s wasn't worth the work it would take to get this to fit properly. Also FYI the whole 160s 150s 140s thing is largely a marketing ploy and not necessarily about quality of the garment. Higher number does not necessarily mean higher quality.

Better off not to buy "bargain" stuff that doesn't fit properly, or can't easily be made to.

The store is called Paul’s Tailors & Alterations Centers and was recomended by a few ppl on the forum. Doesn't mean what you say might not be true about him just not wanting to do the shoulder work. I need the suit for this weekend but perhaps I will continue to look around for another tailor to look at the shoulders for me after the fact. Or start pumping more iron lol.
