Both of those ties would look great on plain blue shirts.

The olive tie is better, but the more I look at it, the more I notice how the blue stripes are spaced similarly to the blue stripes in the shirt, which also looks bad. Ideally, if you're matching stripes on stripes, you want them to be different enough in scale. It just looks better that way.

The stripes on your shirt are too fancy to match with another stripe. If it were a simpler pencil or bengal stripe it would be easier. For a shirt like that you'd need another pattern or a dark solid tie. A burgundy grenadine would be nice.

This is right on, although I still think the left tie is better because the overall "stripe pattern," if that's the right term, is wider than the shirt stripes. That is to say the three blue stripes with the white background are wider spaced on the larger red/orange background. I also think the red/orange color is more complimentary with the blue of the shirt.

Really appreciate your thoughts everyone. Thanks!

I guess I need to make the distinction between formal and casual? Since the "pony" does seem too casual for an event requiring a tie.

What sorts of pants would one pair for a less-than-suit formal but not as casual as say dockers and a ralph lauren button down?

Neither tie is very good and neither goes with that shirt.

So glad you could stop by to let me know what I like and don't like!

We're past the fact they don't match the shirt at all, thanks though.
