Here in Columbus we have a pretty active foodie/indie business culture that would be super easy for someone to start socializing in (i.e. Columbusunderground.com)

I've found basketball to be an incredible networking tool. Almost every basketball court has certain nights when the "regulars" all agree to play. Show up on those nights, play hard but clean, and you'll meet lots of people, and they'll be from diverse backgrounds.

This also works for soccer, if you prefer that.

A lot of the success of these methods will depend on what kind of person you are as well, imo. If youre introverted you could go to 100 classes and still sit by yourself and not know anyone, so anything you do will require putting yourself out there eventually.

Also, dont expect friends you meet to be like the ones you had back home, if theyre local then youll "need" them more than they need you, which can sometimes lead you to getting clingy or become a follower which puts people off. Put yourself out there but dont rush things, and good luck.
