Hmmm, this is a patch pocket (and a nice one at that - especially the patch pocket ticket pocket, I've never seet that RTW). My understanding was a blazer had either besom or flapped pockets.

That being said, brown horn buttons would make this jacket even better. That or smoked MOP.

where can I buy MOP or brown horn button? I have this nice RL Navy Blazer, but the brass buttons are too shiny for me. I want something a touch more casual/less preppy

edit: found these dark brown horn buttons. good?

Gold buttons just look too much like something your father would wear. Like you should be sitting around a fire with a brandy in one hand, and a cigar in the other.
A perfect example would be Glenn Beck. He loves to go for a more casual, youthful look on his show. Nice fitting blazer, jeans, and an understated pair of kicks. But his blazers always have gold buttons on them, and it throws the whole look off.

No navy jackets with navy pants. Blazer + dark jeans will look bad no matter what buttons you have.

That's basically what it's devolved (or simplified?) into, but that isn't a very good understanding of it. After all, buttons don't make the jacket--they can be taken on or off of the jacket, and the jacket will still be what it is.

What we get away with calling a blazer in the states could range from a single-breasted (sometimes even a double!) reefer jacket to a sports jacket, which historically were from two different sources. Quoting wiki: "The sartorial term blazer originated with the red 'blazers' of the Lady Margaret Boat Club (1825), the rowing club of St. John's College, Cambridge." There seems to be some dispute, owing to the "blazer suit," which is basically, (and I think I'm paraphrasing a Sator post,) a suit that really stands out (think, bold white and blue stripes.) The thought with why the jackets became more popular was that people paired them with other pants to basically say "Look at me, I can afford both a loud suit and a formal suit!"

Either way, the term has gotten confuddled and can nearly mean whatever you want it to mean and get away with it if you can back it up, but you probably will find a difference in fabric, possibly in cut (sometimes sports jackets are a bit shorter, harkening back to riding jackets,) and, as noted, the buttons (the gold/metal buttons probably coming from the military's use of them on double-breasted reefer jackets.)

+100. A pair of pants in any shade of brown would look much better.

I wouldn't think of replacing my gold buttons. My blazers are the only jackets with gold buttons.
Sorry I won't jump on the bone button wagon but to each his own.

It's no longer a blazer if you switch out the buttons for plain ones. You can always go with a nice brass instead of gold which will give it more of a casual look without changing the integrity of the jacket.

Sure, technically it might become a sportcoat, but to me, metallic buttons look too formal on a jacket worn with jeans. I would go with brown or black horn (I personally replaced the metal buttons on my blazer with black horn), although the MOP option suggested is also a good one.

"it's no longer a blazer" in a way that only SF/fashion geeks will understand. to everyone else it's the same thing, just with different buttons. buttons that make it much easier to dress down and still look fine dressed up
