Gentlemen,

I am on hollidays in South America, I am currently in Peru.

Here there are several custom shoemakers in the Old Town of Lima.

I wanted to buy a pair of Allen Edmonds Broadstreet shoes for some special occasions, but I was searching to find them discounted, not to pay the $300 they ask, but I never found a pair on my size discounted. I am a 9C

So I took a picture of the shoes to a local shoemaker and he made me this replica. custom made to my feet measurements.

here are some pics

The shoes are hand made using cowhide ( soft ) leather at my request, they are sewn but not Goodyear welted, this is a technique they don't seem to master here. I'd say they are Blake stitched.

Price was $60, made in one week. Fit me right and feel great !

I have ordered a second pair in brown, ivory... I am waiting it for this Thursday, will post pictures when I get them.

What do you think of them ?

the Broadstreet is one of the few AEs I like...yours sure look like them from the pics. The softness of the leather is even visible from the pics, for $60 I don't think anyone can say you got a bad deal. Very nice!

It is really amazing what those shoemakers can do, I only took a print of a pic from the internet to them and they reproduced the style very well.

There are only two details off, the black band at the upper heel is a bit too wide and the curved part of the wing tip should be a little more round.

I hope they correct well those details on the second pair.

Does anybody know if cowhide is better or worse than calf for shoes ?

As far as I know a calf is a child cow, but I have allways preferred the feel and the smell of cowhide leather in jackets than others.

If you narrow that, I think you should widen the black band at the lower heel.

Greetings,

The small details you mentioned are not noticable without you calling attention to them, although your points are well taken. I look forward to seeing pictures of the second pair.

What was the name of the cobbler and what was his address?

Cheers,

CH

Oh, my....that deal makes Jantzen look overpriced! Congrats. As long as you're there, you may as well stock up as much as your luggage will allow!

The Cobbler is at

Jr. Eleazar Blanco 227
Pueblo Libre
LIMA 21
PERU

Phone +5114606582

I think they only speak spanish there...

There are several others to the side of the presidential house on the Lima's main square, with several models RTW, they said they can reproduce any model you want, you just have to bring pictures, and then choose the leather quality and colors.

Not sure how you could go wrong for $60. Even if they were to fall apart in under 18 months. Which btw I don't sppose they will.

Those look great! Can you get them to use a different last shape?

Cowhide is somewhat more grainy and will probably wrinkle a little less gracefully than calfskin, but on a spectator/wingtip style it won't be nearly as noticeable as on, say, a wholecut or plaintoe. And on a shoe that fits your foot really well, you'll have less wrinkling in the first place.

Yes j, I think so and as I will keep them in shoe trees I think they'd keep their shape for a long time..

I have an scheduled trip back to Lima for 2009, if these shoes fall appart for that date I'll get some other pairs..

It was tempting to have the same made in brown suede, even 2 suede colors brown/white... but unfortunately I leave on Saturday so there will be no time for the shoemaker to have more done to me.

I think however the waiting time is quite short considering these are made to measure shoes.

I picked the last from the several they had on my size, I think the shoe shape is nice.
