I have trouble spending money on myself. As much as I love the idea of spending $500 on a sport coat, I know I just couldn't do it. At the same time, I virtually never have an opportunity to wear a suit, so a sport coat is the "most formal" clothing I have an opportunity to wear. These are the results of the past couple months of eBay shopping, with an oldie but goodie thrown in. You'll have to forgive my formatting, if it comes out terrible.
The green and orange gun club is a Brooks Brothers 1818 Madison in a linen, silk, and wool blend. I paid $65 plus $12 shipping. By far the most expensive, but I love a gun club check. Only defect is a slightly pulled seam on the back I can have repaired (wasn't listed by seller).
The greenish tweed herringbone is by Hunt Valley (?) and is 100% silk (maybe not a tweed then, but oh well). It cost me $15 and $8.50 for shipping.
The brown houndstooth is by Ralph Lauren. It is 100% linen, quarter lined, and came with an undisclosed 1" split seam in the back. I contacted the seller offering to pay return shipping due to the split but they offered a refund and told me to keep it. $8 at the cleaners fixed the split.
The brown herringbone is by Georgio de Phillipe(?). It is 100% wool, in a very heavy and itchy fabric, and oddly only quarter lined. At the same time, I love that it has patch pockets and looks very casual. It will be my go to coat this winter. I paid $30 with shipping for it.
The gray herringbone with the windowpane is a clearance item from Men's Wearhouse I got for $30 a couple years ago. It is 100% wool by Joseph & Feiss. I've worn this coat for everything from the movies to a wedding. Best $30 I've spent so far.
The blue windowpane linen by Stafford was incorrectly sized by the seller. When I disclosed this and offered to return it they told me to keep it. Even though they gave me a refund, they were kind of rude about it even though the mistake was their own. I'll sell it to lower my total costs, so we will deduct it from total expenses.
So, provided I can sell the Stafford for $25, I'll have spent $145 on 5 sport coats, which I am immensely pleased with. I feel bad about the ones I was refunded for, but I made it perfectly clear I had no problem paying return shipping and I understood accidents happen, so I know I didn't cheat anyone. Still, free stuff feels weird. Anyways, I think I'm set for a while.
