Don't worry about Jon, Conne. I wouldn't take advice from a 25-year old virgeen.

I think it's hilarious that you just don't get it.

We can go back and forth until the cows come home, but the problem isn't that I don't get it, it's that you can't sell it.

You should dedicate yourself to something else, you never know you might actually achieve something.

I live at home, and I'm older than 25. Lots of major medical problems in the family then we did some elder care, and I was able to help, sometimes more than I wanted to but what're ya gonna do? Some real issues these past few months, almost worst ever, which we hope to resolve in the <6 mos timeframe.

After that, I don't know. Because of the above, my father won't take money from me, but I make myself revenue-neutral at least. If I decide to get my master's in engineering, I'll stay here for now -- < 5 miles from work, < 20 from college. And I put $1k in the bank almost every month. That's hard to walk away from. But I'm thinking of moving away for a serious make money degree in which case I'll probably do a student housing thing.

Regardless, this place will always be my home, and I expect to be back here at some point regardless of the interim. We all put blood, sweat and tears in to build it and to stay here through some rough times.

There are people who can do it on their own almost intrinsically, others need to be tossed in the cold water of reality. Only you know yourself.

Regards,
Huntsman

It's easy to say that now, but that sort of thinking is like the inverse of when you wake up with a terrible hangover and never want to touch liquor again.

Hey I'm similar to you then! well not about the whole girlfriend, no casual sex thing

but I'm studying to be a graphic/web designer ... and as such I obviously appreciate art ... and hope to travel to NY/UK in the next few years!

So what I've understood from the mixed responses to this thread (and correct me if you think I'm wrong) but it's really up-to each individual to weigh the pros/cons and obviously take their financial situation into consideration ... comments??

This conversation rather reminds me of "Failure to Launch". As someone that packed his bags at 17, the whole concept is rather foriegn to me.

People should move out as soon as they're financially capable of managing it, which will vary widely depending on their geographical location, the starting salary in their field, their grad school plans, etc. To a lot of young kids making, say $40-50K in a place like NYC, "moving out to your own place" at 22 or 23 really means splitting the rent with 3 or 4 roommates and getting monthly "supplements" from mom and dad to finance the constant eating out and weekend drinking binges -- nothing more than an extension of college life, just with a 9-5 job replacing classes. How grown up and independent.

So true! Oh and I noted the sarcasm

But that's one thing I definitely do NOT want to happen to me. Once I do eventually move out - I am going to have to be 100% independent! I would hate to have to come back to borrow money! Defeats the purpose!

That's hilarious - because 40-50K in Sydney is about median wage!
