OP, I think what you are doing is both commendable and needed. Obviously there is no father figure and mothers tend to be softies-especially with boys. I say you punch him in the back of the head one good time (so he knows it can happen) and it should be smooth sailing from there. Learn how to bass up your voice and talk thru your teeth. Works wonders.

My mom was tough as nails with her kids. We all grew up awesome.

Parents need to be parents to their children, not try to be friends. Oops, I'm going to be tar and feathered now.

Does the sarcasm at the end of your post inform the tone of the beginning of your post, or are there two distinct tones here?

FWIW, though, I've been told that this boy's (very wealthy) father has instructed the mother to rear him this way while on vacation: "Get him whatever he wants!" When I sat to lunch with my own father today and mumbled my disapproval, he told me it's none of my business. I retorted, "That kid's going to grow up and share in MY world. His integrity IS my business!"

He just kept chewing...

Our son's nanny told us that we were the strictest parents she'd ever worked for. In return, I smacked her across the mouth with the back of my hand and told her to never talk back to us.

I did. A home, a neighborhood, a city, country, the world, etc.; these are just extensions or enlargements of community. I want to share the world with thoughtful, self-reliant, creative people - not procreating ignoramuses.
