I wear both boots and shoes with a strap, monk strap and think the look is great...it is a European look and many American men just don't like it, feel comfortable in them or just plain get it. They are a great look with a suit or slacks. I would not wear them with chinos, unless they are those casual type you see in the Mall, but I don't wear shoes like that anyway. I wear the Alden Monk, great look and fit for a narrow foot, but be aware they have a very narrow toe.

I love monks as well, a pair of well made black monk straps should be one of the first purchases made when building a shoe wardrobe. And they do look somewhat like boots when you are standing, which I like.
Who makes a nice monkstrap in black for ca. $300-$600? Crockett & Jones handgrade seems to be a double monk, which I don't especially like.

Au contraire mon frere.  They also make a single strap monk.  The current model (the Savile) has the more contemporary 337 last; they also made a monk on their older last but it may have been discontinued.

You could also buy the Benchgrade C&J as Peal at Brooks Brothers; it's a more old-fashioned last and a quality shoe at $378.

Brooks Brothers Peal & Co. monkstraps are quite elegant - benchgrade, but with channelled soles. On sale they come down to ~$275 or less.

Agreed. I saw a pair at my local BB in a dark tan. Very nice.

Thanks RJMan, don't know how I missed the Savile. It's even on the PLAL website, which I ogle frequently. I actually tried on the Brooks Brothers monkstrap several weeks ago, but decided to pass, as I was buying the leisure handsewn in shell cordovan and a black blucher (the workhorse of my shoe wardrobe). I just couldn't justify another $300 on shoes, even at 20% off.
