Midnight blue dinner jacket

I'll try to keep this long story short: I was in the market for a dinner suit for an upcoming event, and I stopped at my favorite resale shop to see what they had in stock. They had a beautiful shawl collar midnight blue DJ in my size -- but no matching pants. For a fleeting moment I considered pairing it with black tuxedo pants, but haven't seen that done, so I passed (and later found a gorgeous DB peak lapel Kilgour French Stanbury tuxedo for $43, but that's another long story).

Is it appropriate to wear a midnight blue DJ with black pants, the same way I've worn an ivory DJ with black pants? Or does the midnight blue need to be consistent all the way through?

You can do so serriptisiously. I just commissioned a black mohair tonik suit (90% mohair, 10% wool). Single button, peak lapel, jetted pockets ... in other words, a dinner jacket by all appearances save for the fact that there is no silk facing on the lapel or piping down the trousers. The idea was to have a suit for "going out" that could be dressed up or down depending upon where I was going and what I was doing. In a pinch, it can even serve for a black tie event with the right shirt, vest, and bow tie. Few will notice the lack of silk. And if I'm on a date or at a club, few will think "he's wearing a tux." So basically, I'm getting all the sartorial advantages of a dinner jacket without looking like I'm over-dressed or in costume.

Will post pics when it comes in in a few months.

Not with events that wouldn't make me look like I was in a costume in a tux. New Years is only really a big foreigner holiday here in Korea. They have their own New Years with totally different traditional clothing.

No you should never do that and yes it is a suit NOT an ensemble of odds and ends.
