I have a jacket with working buttonholes that is literally about .25" too long and so you can't normally see cuff; if I pull the sleeves down and push the shoulders up so that the arms become taught you can but the cuff tends to becomes hidden again promptly. Is it worth having the sleeves shortened from the top? If so, how much should I expect to pay in Manhattan and could anyone advise me on a good tailor to use here?

(FYI it's my favourite jacket and definitely worth paying to keep using)

yes. get it adjusted. where are you located? do a "ny tailor" search and you will find many good spots to get it done...

It would bother me to not have shirt cuff showing. I'd get the jacket sleeves shortened.

are you sure that the armholes on your shirt too deep? that may be the problem but then
there is no way the shirt armhole can be raised.
you see if the shirt armhole is too deep, the armhole of the coat pushes the shirt sleeve up.
if that is not your problem then by all means shorten. but you may need more than 1/4".
discuss this with your tailor.

If it's only .25" they probably don't need to do it from the sleeve head, and can just shorten it at the bottom of the sleeve. I've had this done before, and while the first button is a smidge closer to the end of the sleeve than I'd like, it's not a big deal. When it really annoys me I just unbutton the last button, which improves the optics considerably.

I've read that you should only shorten a sleeve from the sleeve head when absolutely neccessary. It is a tricky and expensive operation, and the potential for a poor re-setting of the sleeve is high.

L+S custom on 61st is one of the best tailors in nyc. They are primarily a bespoke suitmaker, but they do do alterations. Its where I go when I want it done right not fast.

Yeah, I'd have to believe that you could shave .25 off at the cuff without needing to have the sleeves taken off. The last time I had that done (because I bought a NWT suit in the B&S with functional buttons on the cuffs - which was not disclosed

) I think I paid $60 or $80, can't remember which.
