Thought I'd post this here since this is the hallowed ground of shoe knowledge. I am looking for a pair of brown leather lace-ups to wear with jeans to work. I am pretty indifferent about the specific style -- captoes would be nice, but as long as they are a medium shade brown (not dark dark brown) then they would work.

I've got a pretty slim budget -- around $200 or $225 -- and tried on a pair of captoes and what I believe were bluchers from the Barneys Co-Op brand. The styling was ok and the comfort level not incredible.

I would like a shoe without rubber soles.

As such, I'm looking toward AE, but things seem a little formal there. Anyone with a good recommendation for a comfortable, stylish brown leather shoe?

I know you specified lace-ups but if you're open to loafers, the AE Steen works very well for me with jeans and I find them to be very comfortable.

I have these Moreschi captoe bluchers in all three colors. Before they discontinued them in late spring, they were $475, but I got them for an average of $225/pair. STP is selling them for $308, but add a 20 or 30% discount coupon from Ask Andy, and you're talking a truly great deal. And they look smoking with dark denim. They are definitely sleeker than any AEs, appearance-wise. In terms of comfort, I wear them in my job as a high school teacher, if that helps. I wouldn't walk 5 miles in them, but they are very comfortable for me to go out to restaurants and bars. The dark tan ones might be a bit light for your needs, but they are gorgeous color, and quite eye-catching. The dark wine is like burgundy, but actually can appear dark brown depending on the angle and the lighting. I have no stake in Moreschi, other than that these are brilliant shoes for the $ IMO, and I'd like to see someone else take advantage of their being closed out.

I have a hard time finding shoes to wear with my jeans. I think dress shoes look funny with jeans, I prefer more of boot looking shoes. Fine leather shoes don't look right poking out from under the think jean material.

i like the chelsea idea as well. i think a pair of nice dark brown chelseas (distressed a bit, of course) looks completely smashing with a pair of dark denim.

I think yoox has a great assortment of shoes that have an updated, fashion forward look that would be ideal with jeans. I see a lot of distressed brogues, with nice detail and in interesting colors. You wouldn't confuse these with dress shoes. Try them, the link is above you on the banners......

Only if you don't care for bike toes, which I personally don't, but the man is looking for options.

Get the AE Holt in Chestnut if you can - it's a plain monkstrap with a medallion. It's been discontinued, but it shows up on ebay every now and then.

Other AE options: Cornell in Chili (split toe monk with commando half-sole, discontinued around 2001-2002), Stockbridge or Ashton in Chili.

Basically, I would look at bluchers, monkstraps, and boots. It doesn't have to be AE, although that is my favorite brand.

I would not get balmoral oxfords solely for jeans, unless you need them for business wear (with a suit or trouser). I know a lot of people propose these as jean shoes, but if you're doing the balmoral oxford with jeans thing, it should be an option, not the main play (in other words, have at least 4 or 5 other brown shoes for jeans).
