Bit of a useless genre term, but anyway - looking for recommendations similar to Bonnie Prince Billy, Mountain Goats etc. Got to say that there's hardly another genre where what I like and what I don't like seems to depend on the most subtle things - I can completely love an artist, but dislike a very similar one. smile

I'll start with:

Smog (=Billy Callahan) - Say Valley Maker

The very first thought I had was 'Winning Losers' by Sentridoh. Man, lo-fi- hadn't seen that term in ages. The second thought I was 'Jamboree' by Beat Happening, which features the most covered indie song of all time, 'Indian Summer.'

I think these two suggestions are lower-fi than the folks you've mentioned...

Sun Kil Moon is good, but like all of the musicians mentioned here, tedious after a while.

Nice OP though, that's one of my favorite Smog songs.

I've been enjoying Warpaint a lot recently, and will +1 to just about anything Elephant 6.

You should also check out some of the influences if you haven't already. Linda Perhacs, Michael Hurley, and Bert Jansch to name a few.

There is so much elephant 6 garbage that it's almost not worth trying to find the good stuff.

Pajo used to make amazing music under the name Papa M. A great unknown musician is Sport Murphy. Not sure if he still even plays music, but his "Uncle" album is one of the most beautiful thing I ever heard. Jim White makes good music too. Edit: I forgot David Grubbs, his solo discs on Drag City have a sort of a folkish side, although I prefer what he did in Gastr del Sol.

Mmm you athens fan boys are so easy to get riled up. Though I'm not sure "narcoleptic" is really a pejorative in this case...
