Khaki Suit/Black Tie/Shoes at the Casino

All,

Yes I am new, and yes I know this khaki suit/shoes topic has come up time and time again. For our fraternity formal we're going to a casino outside of Louisville on Friday night and taking a bus to the Kentucky Derby the next day. We're having a cocktail party followed by a night of gambling on Friday night at the casino.

I'm thinking of wearing a khaki suit (Brooks Brothers Fitzgerald Cut), a black knit tie (not skinny), black wingtips, white pocket square and white shirt. The general consensus on this forum seems to be light brown>black shoes. However I think the khaki suit is more of a day time suit, and I think the black makes it a little more of a formal/evening wear touch.

agree or disagree?

...And before anyone suggests wearing it to the derby...I'm going to be in the infield and not the grandstand. There is NO WAY IN HELL I'M taking it to the infield. It would probably get destroyed.

Tan suits are a no-go at night, particularly inside a casino. Don't do it.

I have a khaki suit I wear with a black tie with white pin dots, white shirt, and black lace ups. Personally, I like it. But at night? Nope. Not a chance.

Everyone will think you are some sort of security guard. Don't wear a khaki suit indoors in the spring. Definitely do not wear black shoes with a khaki suit. You will find some disagreement on the forum with this last rule but don't bother to look it up as I am right. But I think everyone would agree that you would be better off with something else. Either a dark blue suit or, perhaps, given that it is a casino and probably no one will be dressed up at all, a sports coat rather than a suit.

Think of it this way; you want to dress in a manner that is harmoneous with your environment. That's why you wear lighter colors in the summer and darker colors in the winter, etc.

So what is the environment like in a casino at night? This is easy - it calls for black or midnight blue. You want to go dark.
