Italian size vs US size

Hello,

I ordered a Versace suit from Yoox.com recently, I am 5ft8 and half, and I wear size 36 short which usually comes with size 30 pants.

According to many websites as well as Yoox, Italian size 46 is the same as size 36 so I bought the suit. After it arrived the shoulder was way too big, I felt like its just as wide as a US size 38 jacket I have (which is too big). I took it to a tailor and found out that the suit pretty much needed open heart surgery to fit me, so I ended up returning it.

My question is, does Italian Size 46 translate perfectly to US size 36? Is it a case where Versace just makes their suits big, or should I be ordering Italian size 44 in the future for other Italian brands?

thanks,

I don't have much experience, but I am a 40R in my RLBL suit and it fits perfectly. I recently had to return a 48R Zegna blazer I got on Gilt because it's too big. I ordered the 46R today, but I never thought I'd fit in a 36 in anything.

You'll not likely find a 44. 46 is basically the smallest common Italian RTW size. Jeans come in smaller sizes. Some times you see dress pants in smaller sizes but this is rare.

A 46 is 92 cm. Convert that to inches and it's pretty close to 36. But shoulders vary between brands. Try a different brand.

thanks for the quick reply,

I will try a IT46 from another brand and see what happens.

So should I not bother with Versaces in the future? or is there descrepencies even amongst the same brand?

thanks,

I havent looked at Yoox, but my guess is that your suit is from Versace Collection, which is their 2nd line, and not as well made as the Gianni Versace Couture line, which is all canvassed, and has handwork, sometimes made by Zegna. These are the slimmer fit suits, and the Collection suits are more business workhorses that fit a little bigger.

Yeah I didn't pay attention before I returned it, its made in Switzerland so I think its probably versace collection. I did feel that in the chest the middle layer is free floating, but the bottom part is glued to the front layer.

I am actually looking for a decent stylish euro cut business suit thats not too flashy for interviews, that suit would have been perfect for the purpose if it wasnt too big. I was hoping to spend around 400-600. Any other suggestion regarding where to look?

thanks!

Of course sizing will vary from brand to brand and even same brand different lines, but the short answer to your question is that yes, subtract 10 from the Italian to get your US sizing.

This was painfully evident when I special ordered two 46 XL suit for a customer and ended up with a 36 XL.

As an aside, I do have RTW 34 suits.

Not the most accurate conversion. As sizing goes bigger, it will deviate.

This is the right conversion in general.
