Overall, San Fran is a very poor public transportation town. I know a lot of people who take the bus, but it's quite an inefficient way of getting around and doesn't even enter into the same galaxy in which cities such as New York, Paris, and Tokyo exist, with their extensive subway systems. That being said, I have the luxury of living right by one of the stops on a linear subway that travels underneath Market Street, so a quick trip to downtown is extremely convenient, but the use of cabs, namely Yellow and DeSoto, has always been a clean and pleasant experience.

This is why I love the weather here: I suffer from (well, "suffer" is a strong word, but it still sucks) seasonal affect disorder and strangely enough the San Fran weather helps a lot. The shortening of the days and their effect on me is negated, to a large degree but not totally, by the increase of color green due to the rains that occur in the winter. Seriously, everything explodes. When I was a kid I would hate being around deciduous trees because of their barrenness, but their is no prevalence of those trees here.

I've been riding the train to work lately...in Dallas...which has nothing at all to do with this thread...just thought I'd throw that in.

Just got back from a four day "let's check the city out" trip in anticipation of our move in March. Couldn't wait to get home.

In no particular order:

Cabs, if you can find one, are filthy with drivers who have no idea where they are going. yes, but they are typically some kind of white
Homeless crack heads are insanely aggressive. I had to push a guy away from my wife. Next time I bring an axe. yes they are really nuts and aggressive
Waiters are way too chummy and have no idea how do do their job. Look, pal - you are not part of our conversation; don't touch me when telling me the specials; and don't remove an empty plate until we're all finished. I finally had to tell a waiter to leave the plate and he looked at me like I killed his puppy. yeah, service is terrible, had worst waiter ever at town hall
There's garbage on the street. yes
The women look like men. Up close, ugly men.i prefer the women there to women here, cooler looking and less cunty
The residents are like Stepford employees of the tourism board. "Oh, you'll love it here. Did you know you can ski in the morning and surf in the afternoon?" Look closely in their eyes, however, and what you see is a tinge of fear. As if they are trapped in the Billy Mumy Twilight Zone episode.

I met up with an ex-New Yorker and asked him why the **** everyone was so nice. He replied, "It's nice to be nice." **** me.

I was blindsided by one line in a contract and am now royally fucked.

I've always wanted to visit SF, but now having read this thread I don't. I became convinced it is a **** hole. So, I will continue then to vacation in the winter around San Diego
