How saddam is dressed

Politics and atrocities aside, why did Saddam in court today look dressed better than most if not all the people I work with?

I must say, though he is crazy in my opinion, he does have some very nice suits.

I don't want to start any political/atrocity discussion here, but I was somewhat shocked at what he appeared in. I guess I was thinking an orange jumpsuit, but what do I know.

In criminal court proceedings, defendants (presumed innocent) are routinely permitted to dress in "street" clothes rather than the prison garb so as not to unduly bias the fact finder. One would not have thought that much of an issue with Saddam since they really is no hope or expectation of the trial being anything but a neceesary bit of theater. The outcome is pre-ordained and the only open question is the amount of time to permit him to speak, if any. That said, it is fascinating he was permitted to dress well for the sham appearance.

I do believe he wears a lot of bespoke. If one were to look at him before his ousting he had a lot of fine suits, and hats as well.

I guess I might have expected a ill-fitting jacket or something. I suppose someone, somewhere may have kept some of his belongings for him.

Any idea where he used to get his suits?

One of the news stories I read said that the suit came from a store in Baghdad, picked up for him before this hearing. He probably had a captive staff of tailors back in the day . . .

Not to make light of his atrocious reign in Iraq, but sheesh, THAT'S pressure, being Saddam's tailor....my god.

I was thinking what would be worse, being his tailor in Saddam's glory days or what if they would have taken him privately to a tailor before his court appearance and how nervous that tailor would have been as Saddam was making mental notes of the tailor's face.

I recall that when the US took control of one Saddam's palaces that a reporter noted the presence of a large number of Corneliani suits hanging in the closet.  Nothing quite like a smartly turned out dictator.

Wasn't there something about Saddam's bespoke shoes being the same as Bush's?

I read somewhere that Saddam used to have his own private tailor because he could not trust anyone else to make his clothes. He also has a penchant for fine hats, which can be seen in older pictures.
