My friend's view of the usual holiday ride/race up Mandeville Canyon this past weekend. The conditions were slow but we actually went super fast and set some top 10/20 times on the leaderboard of 14000+ people. I'm in the blue around 4min in

Things I don't care about: Cycling
Things I watched all of: That video

If you look closely, you can see my bike parked off to the side around the 7:30 mark! 😅

Questions:
  • Was this basically uphill the entire time? Looking at the power and cadence numbers, it looked like it got really steep in the final couple minutes of the video.
  • What was the total distance and elevation gain on the route?
  • Is this an out-and-back and then the riders are flying on the return? That would scare the crap out of me.

Cool cool cool. 400w for 12 minutes, then a little 700w dig to get separation. 😅

Haha, my friend stopped to mess around with the spin bike after

This part was just the uphill race part. The ride starts with a cruise up the coast for the first hour or so then we race from the bottom to the top of the last hill. The climb is about 5 miles long and 1000 ft of gain with no real stops. We wait at the top for a bit to let people finish then cruise back down; it is a bit narrow and there is no lane marker but it separates not too far down

75 minutes on the trainer last night while watching basketball and Star Trek. 1650 meters swimming this morning at the Y. It’s been two months since I’ve swum SCM, and I felt it.

10.5 miles around the neighborhoods this morning and then another 10 miles on the trails at a park a few hours later.

They marked off some of the trails so now they are one way only but not in a way that allows you to do an easy loop. You’ve sort of got to do one section, loop back around then go out a bit further, then loop around again on the same route and out even further if you want to do all the segments. What a PITA.

I cannot figure out what the point of all that is - the trails are never crowded, even though it’s very wooded and quite hilly the path is as wide as a two-lane road in most parts, and most of it isn’t even open to cyclists so it’s not like you’re competing for space with them. 🤨

I work a lot with the Parks Department and this may be one of the times I have to reach out to the director to ask what’s up. If they’re going to leave that area of the trails as one-way only, they at least need to re-number the trail segments.

Kiddo items kept the last week lower volume than usual. I got in a gym workout Friday, 7.3 miles Saturday, then gym and a Peloton session last night. Should be back to normal this week.

Yesterday I did the Yasso 800 at the track with 1 mile of warm up and 1 mile of cool down. I walked for about 150 meters between each 800 meter interval (along with 20 push-ups after each interval) and averaged about 3:30 for those intervals. Not my fastest work but pretty good for the first Yasso of the spring.

This morning I got out for my customary Monday Morning 10k at a snail's pace of 10:04/mile. Though I wasn't pushing myself by any stretch, I think the combination of weights, plus high intensity spinning 3 days a week, plus the long Saturday runs are starting to catch up with me and I could feel it in my legs.

Tomorrow I'm headed down to SC for a few days and am planning to get a nice scenic run in among some of the trails in Asheville, NC tomorrow afternoon and then in the flatlands along the coast the rest of the week. It will probably do me some good to take a week off from the gym.

Depending on how my drive is going and how early I leave tomorrow morning, I may stop somewhere in the Smokies to do a short run on those trails too. I'm looking forward to the trip - first road tip without the wife and kids in years!
