Hindu funeral attire?

I'm attending a Hindu funeral ceremony for a friend's father. I've read casual white attire is preferred to the traditional western black. I want to do the appropriate/respectful thing and worry that aping another culture can come off as trying too hard. I'm assuming most of the other 'westerners' will be in dark suits and that's what I think I'll go with. Does anyone here have any guidance or experience with this sort of thing?

Either wear a dark suit (nobody will question why am American is wearing a suit) or if you really want see if you can borrow a "kurtah" from your friend. He'll know what it means and will likely be happy that you want to wear something traditional to his father's funeral. Of course this assumes you and your friend are similarly sized.
