By letting you hair grow it will eventually get there. I would let your hair stylist know that you want to let your hair get to all one length and they will cut it accordingly. Even though you are letting your hair grow to one length, a haircut every 4-8 weeks will help get you there faster.

I am not saying that cutting the hair makes it grow faster.

If the hair is trimmed regularly (I said 4-8 weeks since he is letting it grow) it will improve the look of the hair as it is growing out. Layers need to be modified to help it look good (lay better) as it grows out (unless someone doesn't care of course).

Plus, if one doesn't get a hair cut for a couple of months or more and starts to get split ends (not the band by the way) it will make one's hair look frizzy. There is no product that will make that look better.

Then, after several more months of not getting the hair cut, the split ends will continue to split as fast as the hair is growing out and the hair will have reached a particular length and appear to have stopped growing.

That's where the wives tale comes into play. After cutting all of those split ends off, it will appear to grow faster when it actually isn't. It's just that the split ends are gone and not cancelling out the new growth of the hair.

Finally, a hair salon can "relax" the hair or do a "reverse perm". A true relaxer (I think they contain lie) is normally used on ethnic hair to straighten it because ethnic hair is much more coarse than caucasion hair. There are currently several products made for caucasion hair which will straighten it and, for the most part, they are really just perm solution which is combed through the hair to straighten it. They work fine but remember, the hair is going to get curly again over the next several months. The process will need to be repeated to keep the hair looking straight.

After reverse perming the hair, one will then have chemically treated hair and will need a more gentle shampoo and conditioner (moisture AND protein) to maintain healthy hair.

Nothing wrong with all of this but it requires more work and $.

Thanks a lot man. I definetly am considering doing the relaxing treatment, but I heard somewhere that if you do that you can't color your hair. Is that true?

I am not really up on the latest relaxers for caucasion hair and I'm not sure how strong they are these days.

It is true, a good stylist won't straighten and color (permenant color) your hair in the same day but should be able to do it a couple weeks apart. Unless you are going for a darker color, in which case a semi - permanent color or color shampoo is probably fine on the same day. Slight risk though. Get good conditioners.

Bleaching is probably too risky to use soon after straightening.
