Guide to matching skin with fabrics?

Is there an experiment or test one can do, online or at home, to figure out what kind of skin tone one has, and then match that with appropriate fabric? I've heard you need an expert sometimes- e.g. some people think they have a red undertone but in fact it's yellow or something. Do most of you think there is merit to matching skin or eyes or hair to your tie or shirt?

I use the mirror test. I put the garment on or hold it against me, and if I like what I see in the mirror then I buy it.

These 'mirror' things – we should try and sell them, surely there's a market for this kind of thing?!

maybe if you go on photoshop, you can use one of those tools, i've forgotten what it's called, and take a sample of your skin colour then have a look at it from there?

then you might be able to have an unbiased look at your true skin tone and thus figure out your undertones.

I still haven't seen a convincing argument or example demonstrating that skin tone matters with respect to fabric choice. The modern mind's eye expects all possible skin tones and lumps them in the category of 'human color'.
